One of my favorite things about being an artist is the way it keeps me open to inspiration from simple everyday things…like say, trimming trees and bushes in my yard! Trimming this beast left us with a huge pile of branches and leaves, which of course got me thinking about how I could use some of it.
Once our work was done, I gathered up thin wispy branches, thick straight branches and various types of leaves out of the pile. Leaves are great images for artwork and I love hanging colorful fiber art from natural sticks for the contrast.
Here’s a simple little leaf study I did in my sketchbook to record images for later and just play around with some different shapes. I must admit, working in my sketchbook does not come that naturally to me, but it’s something I’m focusing on because it’s so valuable to reference when I sit down to work.
So where did this lead me? To my sewing machine of course! I couldn’t wait to test out a drawing in threads. I’ve pinned this little swatch into my fabric journal to sew down once the page is filled. I’ll share that another day.
The best part is, this is just the beginning. These images can be used for sewing, embroidery, handmade stencils or stamps. Endless possibilities from one little weekend project. ♥
